We Are More Than Human

WE ARE MORE THAN HUMAN
We are more than
We are more than
We
Are
More
Than
Human
Lost
In a Hall of Mirrors
Lost
You will never hear us
Must
You forever fear us?
Come now
We will show you more than this
We are more than
We are more than
CHORUS
We are the clouds
We are the rain
We are the sunlight
We
Are
More
Than
Human
We are the soil
We are the flames
We are the splash of water
We
Are
More
Than
Human
In the book "The Spell of the Sensuous," philosopher David Abram coined the phrase "the more-than-human world" to speak of nature as a realm that thoroughly includes humankind (with all our culture and artifice), yet necessarily exceeds humankind. The phrase has now been taken up as a key term within the worldwide movement for ecological sanity.
This is a song about the more-than-human landscapes, wild creatures, and elements defending the Earth, and who we ourselves become when we join them...

INCANTATION
Ash
Stone
Sky
Sea
Ash
Stone
Sky
Sea
CHORUS
It's an incantation
Wrapped inside a song
Wonder-filled
She sings
(Ash Stone Sky Sea)
It's an incantation
Wrapped inside a song
Veil thin
She sings
She sings
CHORUS
It's an incantation
Wrapped inside a song
Wonder-filled
She sings
(Ash Stone Sky Sea)
It's an incantation
You're wrapped inside a song
It's an exhalation
She sings
She sings
A song about the wonder of feeling yourself being sung.
"Incantation": the art or act of enchanting through magical words. "Enchant" literally means "to wrap inside a song." See the books and essays of Patrick Curry for a trusty guide.

Heliotrope

HELIOTROPE
Sunlight
Daisies
Her eyes
Full of flowers
Sunwise
Stirring
Bright skies
Turning
CHORUS
She is a heliotrope
Head to the sun
She is a heliotrope
Spun from the starlight
Head to the sun
Daystar
Burning
Wayfind
Yearning
CHORUS
She is a heliotrope
Head to the sun
She is a heliotrope
Spun from the starlight
Head to the sun
She is a heliotrope
Head to the sun
Sunlight
Daisies
Her eyes
Full of flowers
The title comes from "heliotropism," the motion of plant parts in response to the direction of the sun, like the heads of sunflowers following the sun in the sky throughout the day. (People can be like plants sometimes....)
Although sunflowers are the main symbol, the word "daisy" literally means "day's eye" and couldn't be left out.
"Sunwise" is the same direction as clockwise, though of course it's the clocks which took after sundials, which took after the sun....

WINE-DARK SEA
Far from the shore
He sang
He sang
The stars
And drank down
the moon
CHORUS
She pulls him
She pulls him in
She pulls him into the dark
The wine-dark
The wine-dark
Wine-Dark Sea
No tide, waves, or storm
She sang...
He sank
Like a stone
Still humming
her tune
CHORUS
She pulls him
She pulls him in
She pulls him into the dark
The wine-dark
The wine-dark
Wine-Dark Sea
A song about a lonely fisherman and the siren who loves him in the only way she knows how.
